The Epic Story of the World’s Greatest Medical Discovery
Archaeologist and historian Mark Horton, tells the epic story of how a Gloucestershire doctor developed a life-saving vaccine with the help of a cow. In 1796, Jenner injected eight-year-old James Phipps with cowpox from Blossom the cow, believing it would protect the boy from catching the deadly smallpox virus.
Jenner’s discovery saved billions of lives all over the globe, and earned him a place in history. Yet despite being the world’s most famous doctor, Jenner remained devoted to his patients and his beloved town of Berkley in Gloucestershire, and continued to be fascinated by the puzzles of the natural world.
This is his story.
