Meet the Team

Welcome to the Edward Jenner Museum in Berkeley, Gloucestershire.                                                                                                         

The museum is a Registered Charity, number 284085. We do not receive any funding from external sources other than through our fundraising efforts. The museum is officially operated by the Jenner Trust which serves to preserve the life and legacy of Dr Edward Jenner and his home, The Chantry, where he pioneered the first documented vaccination.

We have an enthusiastic and dedicated team who run the Edward Jenner Museum. Find out more about us below.

Our hard working team of seasonal staff make up our front-of-house team. Between them they have many years of experience and unrivalled knowledge of the local area. They are ready to welcome you and answer any relevant queries you may have during your visit to The Chantry!

We also have many committed volunteers (including our Board of Trustees) who help run the museum without whom much of our important work would not be possible.

Tim Wallington, BA MB BChir FRCP FRCPath

Tim Wallington recently retired after thirty one years as Consultant Clinical Immunologist at NHS Blood and Transplant and the North Bristol NHS Trust. During that time he introduced clinical immunology services to the South West and had several senior management posts alongside his clinical practice and research. He has served on national committees to promote the practice of clinical immunology which arguably began with Edward Jenner’s introduction of vaccination against smallpox. Recognising the importance of Jenner’s legacy to his own career he has worked at the Museum as a volunteer since 1986.

Professor Andy Morgan

Andy Morgan is Professor of Virology at the University of Bristol. He graduated with a PhD in Molecular Immunology from the University of Cambridge in 1980. He took up a position at the University of Bristol with Professor Sir Anthony Epstein to identify and isolate immunologically important molecules in the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). He was subsequently awarded an MRC Travelling Fellowship to the University of Chicago (1984) to work with Professor Elliot Kieff on the construction of live virus vaccine vectors. He returned to the University of Bristol in 1986 where his research interests encompass all aspects of the development of vaccines to prevent or modify EBV infection and the cancers associated with it. His laboratory was largely responsible for the development of an EBV vaccine that has recently been shown to prevent glandular fever.

Dr L A Mitchell FREng BEng PhD FIMechE

Dr Mitchell is an engineer who spent his career in the electricity industry. Beginning in research, he progressed to occupy senior positions directing technology and strategic planning. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and represented this body at a Parliamentary Select Committee hearing on Innovation. For over a decade, he was a member of the Government's advisory committee on Management of Radioactive Waste. Since retiring from full-time employment he has worked as a consultant on energy and environmental matters with particular emphasis on safety aspects. He has been a Non-executive Director of TWI Ltd and remains a Non-Executive Director of Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd and Automated Space Ltd.

Professor Mark Horton MA PhD FSA

Mark Horton is the professor in archaeology at the University of Bristol, as well as one of the expert presenters on the BBC2 series Coast. As a historical archaeologist, he is concerned with the research into the more recent past, and how it should be presented to the public. He has also been involved in research into the history of Berkeley, conducting excavations in the town, including the garden of the Chantry. In 2010, he presented new BBC documentary 'Jenner's Marvellous Medicine', which encompassed Paris, London and Jenner's former Gloucestershire home. As a trustee, his expertise is concerned with the history of the building and the site, the collections, and how these should be conserved, displayed and interpreted.

Dr Doug Naysmith

Doug is currently a Councillor on Bristol City Council. From 1997 until 2010 he was a Member of Parliament for Bristol North West. As an MP he was a member of both the Health and Scientific select committees. He is a graduate of Edinburgh University and a post-doctoral fellow of Yale University. He carried out immunological research at Edinburgh, Yale and Bristol universities and was a lecturer in Pathology at Bristol University Medical School before election to parliament. He has been a Board member of the Jenner Trust for many years and is also President of the Severn Branch of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. Doug has one son, one daughter and five grandsons.

Judith Willetts

Judith has been Chief Executive of the British Society for Immunology based in London since May 2005. It is in this capacity that she is working with the Jenner Trust to preserve the legacy of Edward Jenner. She previously held senior positions at DrugScope, the UK's leading drugs information charity and the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to this, Judith worked for Penguin Books and, prior to that, was a secondary school teacher. She is involved in a number of projects that focus on the communication of science, public engagement initiatives and education programmes and is particularly interested in medical, ethical and human rights issues - subjects in which she has written for several society publications. Her first degree is in Philosophy and Literature. Judith was Chair of the Jenner Trust 2007-2010. For relaxation, she likes to head out to the open spaces of the Cotswolds.

Sarah Parker MA

Sarah holds an MA in Victorian Art & Architecture from University of London. She has been Director since October 2005. Since then she has overseen the restoration and development of The Chantry opening new areas to the public and raising its international profile as an important scientific landmark. Previously she was at Historic Royal Palaces in London for over 10 years, in both Curatorial and Marketing departments. She curated major exhibition 'Suffragettes, Soldiers & Servants, Behind the Scenes of Hampton Court Palace' writing two accompanying books. She was featured on BBC Radio 4s Woman’s Hour and various television documentaries. Based in the Marketing & Communications department at HM Tower of London, she travelled internationally promoting and generating revenue for five royal palaces.

Joanne Terry MA

Joanne is a graduate of the Ironbridge Institute where she gained an MA in Heritage Management. She joined the team as Assistant Director in April 2010. Previously she worked in heritage marketing at Hereford Cathedral and The Churches Conservation Trust, where she was also Assistant Secretary of the Churches Tourism Association. More recently she expanded her skills working as a fundraiser for Age UK Gloucestershire and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Fundraising. During her time at the Museum, Joanne has launched a Friends Scheme, overseen development of the new gift shop and café and managed the project to restore the Grade II* Listed Temple of Vaccinia. She also manages the Front of House Team.

Education & Events Officer
Helen Jeffrey MA MSc

Helen graduated from the University of Glasgow with an MA in Classics and later gained an MSc in Cultural Heritage Studies from Glasgow Caledonian University. She has previously worked at The Lighthouse: Scottish Centre for Architecture & Design and Culture & Sport, Glasgow. Helen joined the Museum as a graduate intern in February 2010 and so impressed the board of trustees she was appointed full-time Education & Events Officer at the end of her internship. Since then she has expanded the Museum’s education and life-long learning programme, developed new online resources and now oversees group visits, venue hire and events.

Karen Bruff

Karen joined the team in March 2010. She previously spent many years working for the RAF following several postings around the world. Her financial expertise has helped focus the team's recent fundraising applications. Recently she embarked on a Sage qualification and has been toiling away in order to sit her various exams. Her current focus is working with the rest of the team to update our business plan; as well as leading on fire safety and day-to-day financial activities of the museum.

Garden & Maintenance Manager
Rod Sayers

Rod retired from teaching science in 2007 having published numerous science related books. He was appointed Garden and Maintenance Manager in July 2008. He maintains the glasshouse containing vines first planted by Edward Jenner in the early 1800s and has created a Herb and Medicinal plants garden. He regularly takes visitors of all ages on fascinating tours of the garden. As part of a programme to promote the garden as a feature of the house, he has grown vine cuttings, herbs and other plants from the garden currently on sale in the museum shop. During the winter months he has been involved in improvements to the museum including renovation of rooms in the Old Cyder House, and decorating and co-ordinating the work of builders, craftsmen and volunteers.

The Jenner Trust’s main objectives are to:

1. Commemorate Edward Jenner and to maintain The Chantry, Church Lane, Berkeley, for the housing of historical documents, objects and memorabilia associated with Edward Jenner.

2. Maintain and manage The Chantry as a centre for education with particular reference to the Science of Immunology, and for charitable purposes for the benefit of the inhabitants of the town of Berkeley and the community at large.

Our Strategic aims

1. To improve the status of the museum as a major tourist venue and attract more visitors.

2. To help preserve the memory of Edward Jenner.

3. To further develop the use of the museum as an educational centre for the study of Jenner's life

and scientific achievements.

4. To organise activities/exhibitions reflecting the multi-cultural nature of Jenner's legacy.

5. To develop the museum website so that 'virtual' visitors can benefit from the work of the museum.

6. To secure the future of the museum.

Governance

The Jenner Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees (see below) who have ultimate responsibility for the museum’s conservation and the organisation’s work. The Board establishes the policies which define the museum Director’s role. The Director is responsible to the Board for pursuing strategic goals and for the day-to-day activities of the Trust.

The Director leads a team of 10 staff and volunteers covering Curatorial matters, Education, Finance, Events, the Front of House team, Development and Communications, Maintenance of the house and grounds.
